6/22-6/23 Final Thoughts!

Below is the link to the form where you can leave your final thoughts as mentioned in my email. You have no other work for us Monday and Tuesday.

Please know how much I have enjoyed teaching you all this year. This was a great class and I loved hearing your discussions and seeing the effort you put into you work. You were faced with so many challenges this year and you rose to the occasion. I hated not being able to spend these last few months with you in the classroom. I thank you for your hard work and can't wait to see your final projects.I wish you all an amazing summer and I hope you will stop by our office and say hi next year and share your college plans.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Santos

6/15/20-6/19/20

This week you will be working on one final project. Details and requirements are in the PPT below. This is due no later than Friday June 19th at 10pm. This is an integrated assignment that will go in both gradebooks. You have 50 minutes each day to work on this, but should not spend more than the 250 minutes for the whole week working on this.

Submission instructions: You will submit this to Tii. In order for that to work you will need to save a copy of your PPT as a pdf. Choose Save As, then under where you give it a name is a drop down menu. Choose Save As .pdf from that menu. You will upload this to Tii. Remember this will not show animations so make sure everything is always visible.

If you have any questions, please email us or attend the Zoom session on Thursday at 1:00pm. This is part of the class essential learnings, so not completing it by Friday could result in earning an incomplete for the course.

Because We Should

Below you will find a link to a list of anti-racism resources put together by one of our wonderful humanities teachers. There are books, movies, articles. We can all be better and should all be more educated about the injustices in this country. I hope some of you will find these helpful. I have seen and read some of them myself and they are wonderful. If you want some easier but great ones to start, I recommend reading Malcolm X and watching Selma.

Anti-Racism Resources

Here are some other resources that are really great. You are welcome to look over some of these before our Zoom meeting on Thursday.

'Riots,' 'violence,' 'looting': Words matter when talking about race and unrest, experts say

‘Looting’ Comment From Trump Dates Back to Racial Unrest of the 1960s

And for those that find music to be a healing connection, a teacher brought these two great songs to my attention. They were popular in the 70's but are so applicable and may help you wrap your head around how long this fight has been going on.

If you did not finish the video lecture from yesterday, make sure you do so today. Once finished, you can review your notes for the assessment next week. Make sure you also sign up for the Socratic Seminar if you have not done so.

6/4/20

Today we will discuss the end of the Vietnam War and its lasting effects. This will all be in one video. You can watch part today and part tomorrow. You can also watch all today and just have tomorrow to prepare for your assessments next week. The video is not a full 50 minutes so there is some extra time. With note taking it will probably run around 30-35 minutes total (only 25 if you don't have to pause).

Check this out!

Hi students. Some of our Skyline Juniors have created an anonymous survey to collect student voices on the school closure. They have launched this statewide and plan to submit it to OSPI (the office of the state superintendent). They are using this to document what the closure is like and get student voices heard in upcoming plans.

This is incredibly fantastic and I hope you will take a few minutes to participate. They need to hear from you!

Please also remember to answer the live lecture survey I emailed. If I do not hear from at least 2/3 of the class I will not do it. It has to be something I feel will be liked and accessible to most of the class or I will continue with video lectures.

5/29/20

Today you will participate in a small group discussion via Zoom. You should have received an email from Mrs. Santos yesterday afternoon with your group's invite (unless a group member is coordinating a separate time).

5/28/20

Today you need to read the article below on the My Lai Massacre. As you read, consider the questions below. You will be participating in a discussion on this event tomorrow so be prepared with these questions.

My Lai Reading

  • What is something that stood out to you in the reading?
  • Why did My Lai happen?
  • What does the story of My Lai tell us about the nature of the Vietnam War? (Think tactical, logistical, psychological)
  • How do you think this will affect the war effort/support for the war in Vietnam?
  • How will this affect public perception of the war at home?
  • What do you think will be the lasting effect on the soldiers involved?
  • Who is responsible for what happened?
To help with your thoughts on the last question, watch this short 3 minute video that interviews survivors and soldiers from Charlie Company. It is just a short overview as the full episode is no longer available. If you can find the full episode I highly recommend it.

Below is the sign-up sheet for Friday's required small group discussion. You need to sign up for a group no later than today at 2:00 pm. There are instructions in the sign-up if the times don't work for you or your group would like to coordinate something different.

Today you have an assignment on ch. 1 of The Things They Carried with Mrs. Cossano.

5/21/20

Today you should be reading ch. 1 of The Things They Carried for Cossano.

Optional Zoom meeting today at 1:00 pm. Come ready to discuss your thoughts on the questions below: (And bring any questions you have so far!)

  • What really pulled us in to Vietnam? Why did we think it was a good idea? Were we justified in getting involved?
  • Do you understand what Communism is?
  • What stood out to you about what this war is like so far?
  • What U.S. actions surprised you?
  • What does the government secrecy (which we will hear more about next week) tell us about the motives for the war?
  • How do you feel about the draft? Should people be forced to fight in a foreign war that they do not support?

5/20/29

Today you will get an intro to The Things they Carried with Mrs. Cossano.

5/19/20

Today's video lecture covers the strategies use in Vietnam and the conditions faced by American soldiers. This will be important context for the rest of the unit as well as The Things they Carried which you will begin tomorrow.

Vietnam Strategies and Conditions video lecture (Based on survey responses, only about 2/3 of the class responded and of those about 1/3 said they would not like a live lecture. This equated to less than half the class saying yes. So for this week I stayed with a recorded lecture since we also have an optional Zoom discussion on Thursday. However, next week we have a topic that works particularly well for a live discussion so we will try for next week).

Vietnam Strategies and Conditions PPT

Many of you have seen the picture of the little girl running from Napalm before. It is an iconic picture that many students show interest in, wondering why she is running away with no clothes. If you are interested in her tragic story, below is an article with an interview with her from many years later as she tells her story. Normally you would read this with Mrs. Cossano. This year, its is supplemental (optional) if you are interested.

5/18/20

Today we will look at Americanization. This is the process in which America took over most of the fighting in Vietnam. You will need to take notes on the lecture/PPT below. No assignments to turn in. This will serve as good context for The Things They Carried as well. It will also aid in discussion later this week and remember there will be Vietnam Assessment. I also clarify the Hawk/Dove arguments at the beginning of this video.

**Reminder that you are welcome to print out the PowerPoint and just add clarifying notes as you listen to the video lectures. If you have the time, writing notes does get it into your mind better but I know time is an issue for some of you. Use the red items to help you know what to write down as well.

Americanization PPT

Tomorrow's video lecture is a little longer (still should be within the 50 minutes) while today's is shorter than normal. Keep this in mind as you manage your time this week.

There will be an optional Zoom meeting on Thursday to discuss what we've learned so far and any questions you may have (see Thursday's agenda).

Monday, May 11, 2020

5/15/20

Today you will look at the arguments for and against the Vietnam War. Using the document below, you will discover and organize the arguments for each side.

Context: Hawks were those who were very pro-war. They saw a great need to go and win the fight against Communism in Vietnam. Doves were very anti-war. They thought America should stay out of it.

On page two of the document linked below are several quotes from each side. Label each one with an H or a D to indicate which side that argument is for. Then for each quote, summarize the argument on the appropriate side of the T-chart. Example: Quote 1 would be labeled H. In the T-chart under Hawks, you might say "vital to national security".   By the end, you will have a list of reasons under each side of the chart.

**If you get stuck or are having trouble summarizing the arguments, look at chapter 50 section 3 of your textbook under "Johnson's advisers debate increased involvement".

Submit to Hawks/Doves Activity on Tii when finished by 10 pm. If your formatting gets thrown off on the quotes, no worries.

Hawks v. Doves Activity **The formatting of the quotes tends to get thrown off when you download it or open in Google docs so just know that you might have to move them around a bit to see them all.

5/14/20

Today you will be getting some background information on the Vietnam War by learning about the First Indochina War. You will also need to get definitions on some key terms and people. This will be background information for our Vietnam Unit and context for The Things They Carried.

You have the full 50 minutes for this today so feel free to take your time and make sure you have good notes.

5/13/20

Today you will complete your assessment on the non-African America civil rights movements of the 1960's. You may look at Chicanos, Native Americans, LGBTQ, or Women.

As the assessment for our non-African American civil rights movement unit, you are going to write a thesis driven paragraph, using at least two quotes from any of the readings, PowerPoints, or assignments from this week. The movements we have studied are: Chicano, American Indian Movement, gay rights (Stonewall Riots and Harvey Milk), and feminism. You have the full 50 minutes for the block to work, and you should submit by 10pm tonight to Non-African American Civil Rights Assessment.

Prompt: compare and contrast two of the movements with their goals and progress with achieving these goals. In plain terms, we want you to look at a movement, highlight their goals and if they achieved their goals, and compare/contrast them (similarities and differences) to another movement. You could look at feminism and American Indian Movement, or Chicano and feminism, or feminism and gay rights.

5/12/20

Today you will learn about the Environmentalism movement with Mrs. Cossano.

5/11/20

Today you will work on learning about the 1960s/70s feminist movement with Mrs. Cossano.

There will not be a live Zoom meeting this week since we are transitioning to a new unit. However, next week there will be another small group Zoom discussion.

This week we want you to please remember to work at your own pace. Everything for the whole week is posted Monday mornings to allow for this. You can work ahead if you would like. You can also email Santos or Cossano if you need more time on something.

Please let us know if anything we give you is taking significantly longer than expected. If we give you 50 minutes of work and it take you 90, we would like to know. If I give you 25 minutes of work and it's taking you 45, let me know. We are trying to be mindful and adjust when needed but we can't do that without communication from you.

Thank you for all your hard work! I miss you all!

Monday, May 4, 2020

5/8/20

Today you should be participating in your small group discussion via Zoom. See the sign-up below if you need to double check your time and group. You should have received an email Thursday evening with the invite to your Zoom meeting. If you did not get it, email Mrs. Santos.

You should discuss why you think these movements were successful or not and give evidence from the week’s
readings (quotes) that you think best represent each movement. From there the group can take the discussion
where they would like.

Requirements:

  • Must speak 3-5 times
  • Must ask one question
  • Must use 2 quotes

Yesterday you learned about the fight for Chicano rights, especially among farm workers. Today you will read about the push for Native Americans known as the American Indian Movement as well as attempts to gain land. Submit to Tii by 10pm when finished.

AIM reading

This should not take the full 50 minutes. When you are finished, you need to sign up for a small group discussion time for Friday. You can see requirements for the discussion on Friday's agenda. This will be graded similar to a student graded discussion except that Santos/Cossano will be doing the grading. Think Socratic style but low pressure.

For today, click on the Google Doc link below to sign up for a group. You can choose by group members or by a time that works for you. Any group is welcome to change their meeting time, as long as the entire group agrees. Just email Mrs. Santos. This needs to be done no later than Thursday by 3pm or you will be assigned a group. Santos will send out a Zoom invite to each group for their discussion time. If you are unable to make any of the times work or have technology issues, please email Mrs. Santos or Mrs. Cossano.

Do not change times in the sign-up without prior approval from Santos.

Below is a excellent video that gives some more depth on Malcolm X. It goes over very briefly but very well what Malcolm's life and transformation were like and is a good summary of his beliefs. It is optional but highly recommended. If he is a person that interests you, I also very much recommend his autobiography. Super fascinating read.

Welcome to Week 2 of Humanities Covid Style! I loved hearing your thoughts on JFK/LBJ last week and hope you enjoyed digging into the Civil Rights Movement with Mrs. Cossano. Zoom meeting this week will again be on Thursday at 1pm. This Zoom meeting will be focused on discussing the events and people of the Civil Rights Movement. Come ready to discuss what/who you think had the greatest impact on the movement.

Today's Assignment: Today you should be working on the Martin Luther King Jr. assignment on Mrs. Cossano's website. You have 50 minutes to work on this. Any leftover time can be used to work on your research paper. This is due by 10pm tonight (April 27th)

**Please note that all assignments this week are integrated and will go in both gradebooks!

Research Paper: For this week, you should be finalizing your research paper. If you have not already given a peer edit on Tii, please do so! Even if you already got yours edited, please check Tii and see if there is a paper that needs an edit and give them some feedback. In case that's not easily apparent, if you would like a peer edit and have not received one, PLEASE EMAIL ME! I will make sure you get a peer edit from someone. Once finished, use your feedback to finalize your draft and turn it into the Second Semester Research Project assignment on Tii. This is due no later than Friday May 1st.

**Important notes: Remember to not have overly long paragraphs. If your paragraph is pushing one page (or more) it needs to be broken up. You can have Mrs. Santos or Mrs. Cossano check and give suggestions on this. Also, remember you need to revise and include your full source evaluation as part of your final draft. This does not count towards your word count.

Something to make you laugh

Here is your laugh for the week, and a little insight into where my household is at right now.

First read this thread (just until you get to the part asking for donations, though you can read comments if you choose). If a little language offends, just skip this.

So my husband sent me the above. We laughed really hard. And then on Sunday, this happened:

Don't worry, I am in the abomination camp. Though my husband was not... :)  We're thinking of making it an April tradition to commemorate the world that is Covid Quarantine. Will you join the totwaffle world?

4/23/20-4/24/20

You have Thursday and Friday to finish your discussion questions and work on your rough draft. Please email Mrs. Santos with questions or upload rough draft to the weekly feedback if you need help with as section of your paper.

**New Resource: If you are using an image in your paper, here is some guidance on how to cite and refer to your image.
On a page before your Works Cited page, you will have this:

Appendix A (center, no other formatting)

Picture (just copy paste your image, left aligned)
Fig. 1 (Centered underneath the image)

Then in your works cited page, include a normal MLA citation for the image. In text, you can reference the picture by referring to Figure one “In an ad released by…celebrities are shown…  (see fig. 1)”

Below is a great resource for how to properly cite images and gives an example. It shows how to do it using the image in text, but the idea is the same. You will just put your image in an appendix instead of in text.

When finished, please choose 3 of the questions below to answer and upload to the JFK/LBJ discussion assignment on Tii. Due by 3:00 pm Friday April 24th. Remember that your rough draft is also due Friday so manage your time to make sure both get done. These questions should not take more than 10 minutes.

  1. Do you agree with the way Kennedy handled the Cuban missile crisis? Why or why not?
  2. What is another example of a time when the public reacted strongly to the death of a public figure? Why do we connect to people we don't know in this way?
  3. Which LBJ's Great Society programs do you think were most beneficial? Why? (Feel free to use your book to get a little more info on each one)
  4. What is the government's role in society? How much government regulation is too much? Which of LBJ's programs do you think went too far?
  5. Compare 1950s nonconformists to the 1960s counterculture. How did the nonconformists contribute/lead to the counterculture?
  6. What effect do you think the counterculture and the Warren court will have on mainstream society?
You will have time to work on your paper later this week. However, you are at the stage where this would have been at home work. As such we recommend you spend about some time each day preparing your rough draft. Keep your mental health in mind and don't overdo it. Email us if timing becomes an issue for you.

Hello students and welcome to Social Studies Covid style! As you work through the week's assignments please remember the following:

  • For PowerPoints I will point out crucial information in red to guide your note taking. Since I will not be relaying information verbally (except when prior notice is given) I have included more guidance and information that usual. Use the bolded and red items to help focus your notes.
  • I will often include supplemental activities with your work. These are always optional. These are activities we would generally have done in class and will give you the depth that we will be missing during the closure. I encourage you to do as many of these as you are able while keeping your own mental and emotional health high.
Today's task:

Review and take notes on the powerpoint on JFK and the Cold War. There is a supplemental activity on the final slide.

Additional Supplemental Activity:
Critically read JFK's Inaugural Address and consider the following questions. You may email this optional activity to Mrs. Santos.

  1. What were some of the messages you found in your reading of JFK’s inaugural address? What was the tone? What were the major themes?
  2. How can a speech or public statement resonate differently with various audiences, depending upon their point of view? You may answer these on the back if needed.

    1. How would you feel about JFK’s speech if you were a Soviet diplomat?
    2. A Civil Rights Activist?
    3. A Cuban Exile?

There will be required discussion questions due on Tii on Wednesday. See Wednesday's agenda for these questions.

You will have time to work on your paper later this week. However, you are at the stage where this would have been at home work. As such we recommend you spend about some time each day preparing your rough draft. Keep your mental health in mind and don't overdo it. Below is a link to a little supplemental work for this week. We finished learning about the Korean War. Usually I show a documentary called The Forgotten War. The link to the video is below. It is a great film showing the impact of the Korean War.

When you finish the film, email me a response! What did you learn? Why is the Korean War called The Forgotten War? What impact do you think this will have on conflicts that come after Korea?

If you have never seen Groundhog Day, it is your unofficial assignment to watch it this week and laugh your face off.

Now on to business!

April 6 Weekly Work

While you will notice that the activities are essentially the same this week, there is one important addition: We have an official due date for the paper! (see document above) As such, while this week is still optional, we strongly encourage you to make some progress this week, especially if you have not looked at your paper yet during the closure.

In addition to the guidance document, I have included the outline and rough draft revisions PowerPoint as well as some helpful tips on Intros and Conclusions (examples included!). Please look over these as they give some great guidance on your rough draft.

As always feel free to upload your paper with specific questions for feedback to this week's weekly feedback assignment. You'll see in the document that there is also an opportunity for a peer edit this week.

March 23rd Weekly Activities

For this week we would like you to focus on getting and using feedback on your outline. PLEASE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT A FINAL DUE DATE. With things constantly changing, we want you to slow down and really revise your outlines, source evaluations, and language lens.

Below are resources to use in this week's activities. As always, you may email me or Mrs Cossano at any time for help or questions. In general, your first period teacher will be the one reviewing your assignments and giving feedback on Turnitin, but either teacher is available for questions via email.
